6 ways to ensure your pets stay cool during the hot UAE summer

As the temperatures soar in the UAE, it is crucial to remember our furry friends who struggle to stay cool in the scorching heat. Unlike humans, pets do not have the ability to sweat and regulate their body temperature effectively. Therefore, it is essential to take extra precautions to ensure their well-being during the summer months.

To provide valuable insights on how to keep your pets cool and safe this summer, we turned to our friend Yvonne and her adorable pup, Boefje from Doggie Adventures UAE. Together, we have compiled a list of tips to help pet owners navigate the challenges of the summer heat and prevent their furry companions from overheating.

1. Dogs should ideally be walked early in the morning or after sunset:
With the UAE’s streets paved with heat-absorbing materials like concrete and tarmac, it is crucial to check the ground temperature before taking your dog for a walk. To ensure it is safe for your pet, use your hand or bare foot as a barometer. If you can comfortably place it on the pavement for 10 seconds, it is safe to walk your dog. Additionally, consider shortening the length of walks, slowing down the pace, and opting for shaded routes to prevent overheating.

2. Keep pets indoors during the hottest hours of the day:
Pets, especially short-nosed dogs and small animals, struggle in extreme heat conditions. It is advisable to keep them indoors during daylight hours, particularly between noon and 4 pm when the sun is at its strongest. If your pets enjoy the outdoors, ensure there is a shaded area for them to retreat to and provide a bowl of water at all times.

3. Watch out for signs of overheating:
Be vigilant for signs of overheating in your pets, such as heavy panting, bloodshot eyes, increased drooling, dizziness, vomiting, and lethargy. If your pet shows any of these symptoms, apply an ice pack or wet towel to cool them down and seek veterinary assistance immediately.

4. Water is essential – and not just for drinking:
Always keep your pets hydrated by providing access to water throughout the day. Ensure that water bowls are filled and easily accessible, both indoors and outdoors.

5. Give your pet a summer makeover:
Consider grooming your pet to remove excess fur and help them stay cool in the summer heat. Consult a professional groomer before clipping or shaving your pet’s coat, as some breeds require their fur for protection against the sun.

6. Never leave your pet in a parked car:
Under no circumstances should you leave your pet in a parked car, even for a short period. Cars can quickly become hot, leading to dehydration and heatstroke in pets. Always ensure your pet has proper ventilation and access to water when traveling.

In addition to these tips, investing in summer essentials for your pet can further help keep them cool and comfortable. Items such as portable dog water bottles, paddling pools, cooling vests, and mats can provide relief from the heat. Dog ice cream and paw balms are also great options to pamper your pet during the summer months.

By following these tips and being mindful of your pet’s well-being, you can ensure that they stay safe and comfortable during the sweltering summer days in the UAE. Remember, our furry companions rely on us to keep them cool and protected, so spare a thought for your furrier residents this summer.
