Millage request for Chippewa County Animal Shelter on Tuesday’s ballot

The Chippewa County Animal Shelter is facing a crucial decision that could impact the lives of countless animals in the community. With rising costs of veterinary care and the need to maintain their no-kill policy, the shelter is seeking voter support through a millage proposal that will provide essential funding for the next six years.

Holly Dawson-Henderson, the director and animal control officer at the shelter, explains that the millage increase is necessary to cover the escalating expenses of medical care for the animals. This includes vaccines, antibiotics, flea and tick medication, deworming, diagnostics, and treatment for various illnesses. Additionally, the shelter offers financial assistance for spaying and neutering services to low-income residents in the community.

For over fifteen years, the Chippewa County Animal Shelter has operated as a no-kill facility, meaning they do not euthanize healthy or treatable animals due to time limits or capacity issues. Euthanasia is reserved for terminally ill animals, those suffering from poor quality of life, or those deemed dangerous to public safety. However, without the necessary funding from the millage proposal, the shelter may be forced to change their policies and potentially euthanize animals due to lack of resources.

In addition to the animal shelter millage proposal, there is a second proposal on the ballot for the renewal of a millage that supports Chippewa County Senior Services and Programs. This renewal will provide operating funds for the Chippewa County Community Action Agency’s Meals Programs and Senior Services for the next four years.

Both millage proposals are crucial for the well-being of the community’s animals and senior citizens. The funds generated from these millages will ensure that essential services are maintained and enhanced, benefiting those who rely on these programs for support and care.

As voters head to the polls, they have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of animals and seniors in Chippewa County. By supporting these millage proposals, they can help sustain vital services and uphold the values of compassion and care within the community. It is a chance to show solidarity with those who are most vulnerable and ensure that they receive the assistance they need to thrive.
