The incident began on a seemingly ordinary Sunday on Lake Erie, where a local family’s leisurely day turned into a moment of panic. Stina Roach, an Erie resident, recounted the events that unfolded as she and her family were enjoying the waters off the foot of East Avenue. A man approached them, urgently warning the children to get out of the water. When Roach looked out into the lake, she was shocked to see what appeared to be a 4 to 6-foot alligator lurking in the distance.
Initially skeptical, Roach zoomed in with her phone and confirmed the presence of the alligator. The sight was both thrilling and frightening, as the family had never encountered such a creature in the lake before. Concerned for the safety of both the animal and the public, Roach took action by contacting the police’s nonemergency line and reaching out to a nearby bait shop for assistance.
The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission was promptly notified of the situation and enlisted the help of animal trapper Paul Kaiser from Best Wildlife Services. Together, they devised a plan to safely remove the alligator from the area near the former Erie Coke Plant at 925 East Bay Drive. The goal was to ensure the well-being of both the public and the animal, as alligators are not native to the region and could pose a threat if left unchecked.
Erie Zoo Director of Development Scott Mitchell weighed in on the situation, speculating that the alligator was likely an exotic domestic pet that had been released into Lake Erie. He emphasized the importance of capturing the animal before winter, as the cold temperatures would be fatal for a creature not accustomed to such conditions. Mitchell also warned of the potential dangers of encountering an alligator on land, advising the public to stay away and contact authorities immediately.
