Texas shelters in need of assistance for hundreds of animals displaced by Beryl

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl’s widespread devastation, Texas communities are coming together to aid in the rebuilding process and help hundreds of injured or orphaned animals. The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center has been at the forefront of this effort, taking in more than 200 wild animals that were impacted by the storm. These animals include birds such as Mississippi kites, mourning doves, white-winged doves, as well as opossums and squirrels.

The Austin Humane Society has also been actively assisting displaced animals in the wake of Hurricane Beryl. Dr. Katie Luke, a veterinarian and chief operations officer for the Austin Humane Society, stated that they have been providing aid to stray cats and dogs in the affected areas. The organization has been working tirelessly to rescue animals from shelters on the coast, ensuring that they are safe and ready to be reunited with their owners or find new homes.

Dr. Luke emphasized the importance of removing animals from the path of the storm before it hits, as this is the safest option for both the animals and the shelters in the affected areas. While the city of Austin has not been as severely impacted by the storm as the coastal regions, they are still working to assist those in need. The Austin Humane Society is exploring options to relocate animals from the coast to Austin, where they can receive proper care and shelter.

For those in Austin looking to help, Dr. Luke suggests offering to adopt or foster a pet for a week or two. This temporary assistance can greatly aid in finding permanent homes for these animals. Financial donations are also welcome to support the care of these animals, and interested donors can visit the Austin Humane Society’s website for more information on how to contribute. Additionally, the shelter has an Amazon wish list for those who wish to send supplies such as dog treats or toys to keep the animals occupied and comfortable during their stay.

The efforts of the Houston SPCA, the Austin Humane Society, and other organizations in Texas demonstrate the power of community unity in times of crisis. By coming together to support both humans and animals affected by natural disasters, these communities are able to rebuild and recover stronger than ever.
