I believed she was dead

A family outing turned into a terrifying ordeal when a young girl was kicked in the head by a wild horse at Mount Charleston, just outside of Las Vegas. The incident left 3-year-old Olivia Wilkey with a head injury that required hospitalization, but thanks to the quick actions of bystanders, she is now on the road to recovery.

Haley Wilkey, Olivia’s mother, recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the family was at Lee Meadows for a photo shoot when two wild horses approached. The peaceful scene quickly turned chaotic as one of the horses targeted Olivia and delivered a powerful kick to her head. The mother’s initial shock and fear turned to panic as she realized the severity of her daughter’s injuries.

With no cell service in the area, Haley’s husband had to drive down the mountain to call for help, leaving her to tend to Olivia with the help of a stranger who happened to be nearby. This unknown Good Samaritan provided first aid supplies and assisted in applying pressure to Olivia’s wound, stemming the bleeding until emergency services could arrive.

The family expressed their gratitude towards the stranger, whose quick thinking and assistance were instrumental in saving Olivia’s life. Despite the chaotic and stressful situation, the bystander’s presence of mind and willingness to help made a significant difference in the outcome of the incident.

Following the ambulance ride and helicopter transfer to the hospital, Olivia underwent scans that thankfully showed no signs of brain damage. By Tuesday evening, she was sitting up in bed and talking, showing signs of improvement and resilience in the face of adversity.

Reflecting on the incident, Haley admitted that in hindsight, they were too close to the wild horses and would have avoided the meadow altogether if they had known the potential risks. The family’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, especially in unfamiliar or unpredictable environments.

As Olivia continues her recovery, the Wilkey family is grateful for the support and assistance they received during a moment of crisis. Their story is a reminder of the kindness and compassion that can be found in unexpected circumstances, as well as the importance of staying vigilant and cautious when interacting with nature.

In the end, Olivia’s resilience and the community’s support have helped the family navigate a challenging situation, emphasizing the importance of safety and awareness when enjoying outdoor activities. The incident serves as a reminder to always prioritize safety and respect when encountering wildlife, ensuring that everyone can enjoy nature responsibly and without harm.
