Animal-Inspired Art Show in West Vancouver Gallery

The Silk Purse Arts Centre in West Vancouver is currently hosting an exhibition that invites visitors to explore the world of animals often overlooked in our daily lives. Titled Animalia, the exhibition features expressive animal portraits by four talented North Shore artists: Peyman Hajian, Cory Kinney, Sharka Leigh, and Kathleen McCormick. These artists showcase their unique styles and perspectives on animals, creating a diverse and captivating display for viewers to enjoy.

The theme of Animalia emerged organically after the West Vancouver Community Arts Council put out an open call for artists. Steven Snider, spokesperson for the council, highlights the universal connection that people have with animals, whether as pets, farm animals, or wildlife. This connection serves as the foundation for the exhibition, drawing viewers in to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom.

One of the standout artists in the exhibition is Cory Kinney, whose bold acrylic paintings of insects challenge viewers to see the often-overlooked beauty in these creatures. Inspired by a visit to the Natural History Museum in London, Kinney’s work captures the intricate details and vibrant colors of insects, reminding us of the wonder and diversity found in nature. His colorful and graphic style brings a fresh perspective to these often misunderstood creatures.

Sharka Leigh, another featured artist, focuses on painting cows with a fondness for their personalities and charm. Her detailed and realistic portraits capture the essence of these gentle giants, showcasing their affectionate bonds with humans and other animals. Leigh’s dedication to visiting local dairy farms to meet her subjects and take reference photos shines through in her artwork, evoking a sense of joy and admiration for these beloved animals.

Peyman Hajian, a seasoned artist and art instructor, brings a unique perspective to the exhibition with his driftwood artwork inspired by the natural beauty of his new home in Canada. Using locally sourced driftwood, Hajian incorporates traditional Persian symbols and colors into his pieces, creating a harmonious blend of nature and culture. His work reflects a deep appreciation for the environment and the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Overall, the Animalia exhibition at the Silk Purse Arts Centre offers a rich tapestry of artistic interpretations of animals, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Through the eyes of these talented artists, we are reminded of the importance of supporting local art and preserving the wonder of handmade creations in a digital age. Visit the exhibition before it closes on July 21 to immerse yourself in the captivating world of Animalia.
