To address this issue, the Austin Animal Center and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department have launched campaigns to educate residents, particularly newcomers, about leash laws. However, enforcing these ordinances can be challenging, as Austin Animal Services has a limited number of officers covering a vast area.
For dog owners who wish to have their pets off-leash in designated areas, certain precautions are recommended to prevent incidents with other dogs. Dog trainer Allegra Kaough advises keeping your dog within 10 feet of you at all times and ensuring that they respond to your calls consistently. When allowing your dog to interact with other dogs, Kaough suggests monitoring the initial interaction closely and intervening if necessary. It is essential to pay attention to the body language of approaching dogs and be prepared to intervene if signs of aggression are present.
In the event of a dog fight, Kaough provides tips on how to safely separate the animals and prevent further escalation. She recommends carrying citronella spray, an air horn, or a bite stick as precautionary measures. If a dog injures or kills another animal, it may be investigated and classified as a „vicious dog,“ leading to restrictions on its movements. Additionally, the Texas Health and Safety Code stipulates that a dog that harms a person may be euthanized, unless it was acting in defense.
To avoid potential fines and legal consequences, dog owners are advised to adhere to leash laws and only allow their pets off-leash in designated areas.
