Few Mothers Participate in the Grand Prix

Growing up as a Millar, show jumping was not just a hobby or a passion—it was a way of life. With a father who was a renowned show jumper, I was exposed to the best in the business from a very young age. I witnessed my dad win World Cup Finals and compete at multiple Olympic Games, setting a high standard for excellence in the sport. Additionally, I had the privilege of watching talented female riders like Beezie Madden, who made the sport look effortless and truly inspiring.

However, one thing that stood out to me as I grew up in the show jumping world was the lack of mothers in the Grand Prix ring. Looking back at the top female riders from the previous generation, it was evident that many of them did not have children. This trend continued into my generation, where mothers remained a minority in the Grand Prix. Despite this, I found solace in the camaraderie and support of the few mothers in the sport, forming a close-knit community that cheered each other on and encouraged more women to pursue both professional riding and motherhood.

Being a mother in the show jumping world comes with its own set of challenges. Balancing the demands of training, competing, and caring for children can be overwhelming at times. The all-encompassing nature of the sport often requires sacrifices in other areas of life, making it difficult to juggle multiple responsibilities. Leaving my children to travel to horse shows is always the hardest part, as the guilt of not being physically present weighs heavily on me. However, I remind myself that I am setting a positive example for my children by pursuing my dreams and showing them that women can be ambitious, high achievers, and loving mothers simultaneously.

Despite the challenges, my love for horses and the sport drives me to continue competing and striving for excellence. The bond formed with these magnificent animals is what truly fuels my passion for show jumping, reminding me that they are the true stars of the sport. By prioritizing the well-being of the horses and fostering strong partnerships with them, I believe that longevity and success in the sport can be achieved.

Ultimately, my children are the driving force behind my dedication to show jumping. Whether on good days when I feel proud to inspire them or on bad days when I seek solace in their unconditional love, they remain the center of my world. Striking a balance between pursuing my passion for the sport and being present for my family is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Embracing the lessons of resilience, perseverance, and sportsmanship that show jumping teaches me, I hope to instill these values in my children and set a positive example for future generations of female riders.

In conclusion, being a mother in the show jumping world presents unique challenges and rewards. Through the support of a close community of fellow mothers and a deep love for the sport and its majestic horses, I navigate the complexities of balancing professional riding and motherhood. By prioritizing the well-being of my family and the horses, I strive to lead by example and promote a healthy approach to sport for all. #WeRideTogether celebrates women in sport and advocates for a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle in the world of show jumping.
