Designing a Catio for Indoor Cats: Dr. Karyn’s Guide and Video

Keeping your beloved feline friends safe and happy is a top priority for any cat owner. As a veterinarian with a passion for feline health and well-being, I have seen firsthand the dangers that outdoor cats can face, from traffic accidents to fights with other animals. In this article, I will discuss the benefits of keeping your cats indoors and share my personal experience of creating a safe outdoor space for my own cats.

In Australia, where I grew up, the impact of cats on native wildlife is a serious concern. The feral cat population is estimated to be in the millions, and they are responsible for killing millions of native animals every day. As a result, legislation has been put in place to regulate cat ownership and protect wildlife. This experience has shaped my views on keeping cats indoors, even after moving to the UK where outdoor cats are more common.

One of the main reasons for keeping cats indoors is to protect them from harm. In built-up areas, cats are at risk of being hit by cars, attacked by dogs, or getting into fights with other cats. These dangers can lead to serious injuries or even death. By providing a safe indoor environment for your cats, you can ensure their well-being and longevity.

Indoor cats also have a lower risk of contracting diseases or parasites from other animals. They are less likely to be exposed to infectious agents and can receive regular veterinary care to maintain their health. Additionally, indoor cats are less likely to get lost or go missing, reducing the stress and anxiety for both the cat and the owner.

While keeping cats indoors may be controversial in some circles, I believe it is the best choice for their safety and well-being. However, that doesn’t mean they have to miss out on the joys of the outdoors. Creating a cat enclosure, or „catio,“ can provide a safe and stimulating outdoor space for your cats to explore.

In my own home, I have built a catio using panels from a chicken pen, allowing my cats to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine without the risks of roaming freely outside. The catio has a secure door, a scratching post, access to cat grass, and comfortable bedding for lounging. I have also added cat-safe plants for enrichment and stimulation.

My cats have taken to the catio with enthusiasm, exploring and relaxing in the outdoor sanctuary. Even during the colder months, they seem to enjoy the space, showing that with the right setup, cats can still enjoy the outdoors in a safe and controlled manner.

In conclusion, keeping your cats indoors is a responsible choice that can help protect them from harm and ensure their well-being. By creating a safe outdoor space like a catio, you can provide your cats with the best of both worlds – the safety of indoor living and the enrichment of outdoor exploration. Remember, the health and happiness of your feline friends should always be a top priority.
