Animal control officer in Kilgore cautions residents about risks of wildlife encounters

As the temperatures rise in East Texas during the hottest months of August and September, wildlife encounters with humans become more frequent. This can lead to potential problems as animals seek out food, water, and shelter in human-inhabited areas. Kilgore animal control officer Tom Sawyer emphasizes the importance of being cautious and knowing how to handle these interactions.

According to Sawyer, when encountering wildlife, it is essential to make yourself appear larger and back away slowly to avoid escalating the situation. This is especially important when dealing with potentially aggressive animals such as skunks, raccoons, bats, foxes, and coyotes, which are known carriers of rabies. These animals may pose a threat not only to humans but also to domestic pets and livestock.

One common issue during the hot months is predators targeting small pets and livestock for an easy meal. Chickens, in particular, are vulnerable to attacks from wild animals looking for food. Sawyer advises pet owners to be vigilant and not leave their pets or pet food outside where they could attract unwanted attention from wildlife.

It is crucial to understand that attempting to care for wild animals can do more harm than good. In fact, it may even lead to legal trouble as many wild animals are protected by state and federal laws. Instead, Sawyer recommends taking preventive measures to reduce the chances of wildlife encounters by eliminating food, water, and shelter sources that may attract animals to your property.

To minimize the risk of wildlife interactions, it is essential to clear away brush and trash areas where animals could hide, as well as refrain from providing food or water that could encourage them to stay. By taking these precautions, you can help protect both yourself and the wildlife in your area.

In conclusion, as we enter the hottest months in East Texas, it is important to be aware of the potential for wildlife encounters and take steps to mitigate the risks. By following the advice of experts like Tom Sawyer and being proactive in preventing wildlife interactions, you can help ensure the safety of both humans and animals in your community.
