Animal rescuers are facing challenges in saving pets as extreme weather intensifies

Natural disasters can strike at any time, leaving devastation in their wake. When these disasters hit, it’s not just humans who are affected – animals are also in need of assistance. Organizations like American Humane and ASPCA step in to offer a helping hand to our furry friends in times of crisis.

American Humane and ASPCA are two organizations that provide boots-on-the-ground assistance during disasters. They offer emergency shelter, food, and rescue services to animals who have been displaced or stranded. For example, American Humane recently helped rescue farm animals like horses, cattle, and goats in DeSoto County, Florida, after flooding from Hurricane Ian in 2022. These organizations play a crucial role in ensuring that animals are not forgotten or left behind during times of crisis.

In addition to immediate assistance, ASPCA also offers capacity building and emergency response grants to help organizations prepare for and respond to climate-related disasters. These funds have been used to invest in essential supplies like water-rescue boats, power generators, and animal-transport units. By providing resources and support to shelters and rescue groups, ASPCA is helping to ensure that animals are well cared for during emergencies.

One important aspect of disaster response for animals is ensuring that they have a safe and healthy place to go following evacuation orders. According to experts, many families will not evacuate without their pets, so it’s crucial to have pet-friendly shelters available. Organizations like the American Red Cross have begun to open their shelters to accommodate both people and their furry companions, making it easier for families to evacuate together.

As natural disasters become more frequent and severe, it’s essential for pet owners to be prepared. A survey conducted by ASPCA in 2021 found that 83 percent of pet owners live in areas that can be affected by disasters, yet less than half have an emergency plan in place. It’s important for pet owners to have a plan in place for their animals in case of an emergency, including having supplies, medications, and a safe place to stay.

In conclusion, offering a helping hand to animals during disasters is a crucial part of disaster response efforts. Organizations like American Humane and ASPCA play a vital role in providing assistance, resources, and support to animals in need. By working together to ensure the safety and well-being of animals during emergencies, we can help to mitigate the impact of disasters on our furry friends.
