Annual Zoo Weigh-In: A Collection of Photos Featuring Creatures Big and Small

Whipsnade Zoo, located in Bedfordshire, recently held its annual weigh-in event to record the vital statistics of over 10,000 of its animal residents. This event is crucial for the zoo’s keepers and vets to monitor the health and well-being of all the animals under their care. From the tiniest snails to the tallest giraffes, every creature at the zoo had their weights and measurements meticulously recorded and added to a shared database. This database allows zookeepers from around the world to compare important information on thousands of threatened species, aiding in conservation efforts globally.

One of the highlights of the weigh-in was the variety of animals that participated in the event. From bongos to bears, each species had its own unique way of being coaxed onto the scales. For some animals, like the Vampire Crab, specialist measuring kits were required to accurately record their weight. Others, such as the red-billed hornbill Mali, needed a bit of encouragement from keepers to step onto the scales. Doby the aardvark, on the other hand, happily snuffled into position in exchange for a tasty breakfast.

Pembe the Bongo, a majestic antelope species, was enticed onto a giant weighboard by keepers offering his favorite vegetables. The European brown bears at the zoo were lured with a smear of honey, while the endangered reticulated giraffes happily nibbled on willow branches as they were weighed. Each animal’s unique personality and preferences were taken into account to ensure a stress-free and successful weigh-in process.

The annual weigh-in at Whipsnade Zoo not only provides valuable data for the zoo’s staff but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts for all species, big and small. By monitoring the health and well-being of each animal in their care, the zoo can better understand and address the needs of endangered species and contribute to global conservation initiatives. The dedication and care shown by the keepers and vets at Whipsnade Zoo during the weigh-in highlight their commitment to the welfare of all the animals under their watch, making it a truly special and meaningful event for both the animals and the staff involved.
