In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, Austin Wildlife Rescue (AWR) has stepped up to help the displaced wildlife, particularly baby birds who have lost their nesting and rooking sites. On July 11, AWR welcomed 60 baby birds, including 30 Mississippi kites and 30 egrets, rescued by Houston wildlife organizations. The impact of the hurricane on the Houston bird population has been devastating, with hundreds of birds losing their lives.
The egrets, a common wetland bird in Texas, are expected to be released back into the wild in late August. On the other hand, the Mississippi kites, a woodland bird that migrates through Texas during the summer months, are set to be released in September. The sudden displacement of these birds poses a significant challenge to AWR, as they require specialized diets and habitats, estimated to cost around $30,000. Despite the challenges, AWR is committed to providing the best care possible for these vulnerable birds.
Jules Maron, a certified wildlife rehabilitator and the executive director of Austin Wildlife Rescue, emphasized the organization’s dedication to rehabilitating and releasing injured or abandoned animals while also educating the public about wildlife preservation. Currently, AWR is caring for around 1,600 wild animals and has reached its highest capacity of the year due to the influx of displaced wildlife from Hurricane Beryl.
To support the efforts of AWR, the community has rallied together and raised over $35,000 through the Austin Wildlife Rescue Fundraiser. This financial support is crucial in helping the organization provide the necessary care and resources for the displaced wildlife. The funds will go towards ensuring that the baby birds are returned to their native habitats once they are ready to be released back into the wild.
The outpouring of support from the community showcases the importance of wildlife preservation and the willingness of individuals to come together in times of need. By supporting organizations like Austin Wildlife Rescue, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of displaced animals and contribute to the conservation of our natural environment. If you would like to contribute to the cause, consider making a donation to the Austin Wildlife Rescue Fundraiser and help ensure the well-being of these vulnerable birds.
