Bear relocated to Salmon due to ongoing issues with bird feeders, garbage, and pet food

Bear conflicts are becoming more common in towns across the country, with Salmon, Idaho, just south of Sula, being the latest area to experience this issue. Game wardens recently trapped and relocated a black bear within the city limits of Salmon, highlighting the growing problem of bears seeking out easy food sources in urban areas.

According to Idaho Fish and Game, bears are increasingly venturing into city limits in search of food sources such as bird feeders, unsecured garbage, and pet food. This trend is likely to continue, with the need to relocate bears becoming an annual occurrence. To address this issue and ensure the safety of both residents and bears, Idaho Fish and Game is urging people to secure attractants and take proactive measures to prevent bear conflicts.

Dennis Newman, IDFG wildlife manager, emphasized the importance of addressing bear concerns for the safety of both humans and wildlife. He stated, „We encourage folks to help us address the bear concerns for the safety of themselves, their property and pets, as well as the bear’s wellbeing.“ By taking simple steps to secure attractants, residents can help reduce the likelihood of bears entering their neighborhoods and minimize potential conflicts.

To avoid attracting bears to residential areas, Idaho Fish and Game recommends the following tips:

– Remove bird feeders between April and mid-November
– Feed pets inside and keep pet foods indoors at all times
– Promptly pick fruit when it ripens and clean up fallen fruit
– Place trash cans out on the morning of pickup day, not the night before
– Do not keep coolers, refrigerators, or freezers outside
– Keep barbecue grills clean after use

If a bear has already visited a property and found food, it is crucial to take immediate action to prevent further visits. By removing attractants and making the area less appealing to bears, residents can discourage repeat visits and reduce the risk of habituation. Habituated bears pose a significant safety threat and may need to be euthanized if they become a persistent problem in urban settings.

Residents are encouraged to report bear problems to their local Fish and Game office promptly. By notifying authorities early, staff can provide information to homeowners on making their neighborhoods less attractive to bears and implement non-lethal interventions more effectively. Timely reporting of bear sightings and conflicts can help prevent future incidents and protect both residents and wildlife.

In conclusion, bear conflicts are a growing concern in urban areas, and it is essential for residents to take proactive steps to prevent attractants and minimize the risk of encounters with bears. By securing food sources and following guidelines from Idaho Fish and Game, individuals can help create a safer environment for both humans and wildlife. By working together to address bear concerns, communities can coexist peacefully with these magnificent creatures and reduce the need for relocation or euthanization.
