A wild black panther was recently captured in a Malaysian residential neighborhood in the state of Negeri Sembilan, sparking fear and confusion among residents. The state’s Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) set a trap and successfully caught the elusive cat early on a Sunday morning, more than a week after it was first spotted.
The incident began when a family in Kampung Ulu Beting, Kuala Pilah noticed that some of their dogs had gone missing from their farm in September. Their concern escalated when they witnessed a wild cat outside their home, capturing a puppy and disappearing into the nearby jungle late at night. The residents attempted to scare the panther away with firecrackers, but to no avail. They immediately called for help and were advised to evacuate the area for their safety.
Rusmazaiti Kamarulzaman, a resident of Ulu Beting, shared her experience of the encounter with the black panther, expressing relief that the animal was finally captured. She mentioned that this was not the first time they had seen a panther in the area, as a similar sighting had occurred a month prior. Concerned for the safety of her two young children, Rusmazaiti was grateful for the swift action taken by the authorities.
The captured panther will undergo examination by the state’s Veterinary Services Department, according to Negeri Sembilan Perhilitan director Nurul Ermi Ramli. However, Rusmazaiti raised concerns about the possibility of more wild panthers roaming the neighborhood, as other paw prints were discovered in the vicinity. Despite this, she remains hopeful that the recent capture will prevent any further incidents involving the elusive predators.
Negeri Sembilan has had previous sightings of black panthers, with reports of encounters that did not result in any casualties. In a separate incident, a retired military man living near Kampung Gachong in Inas, Kuala Pilah encountered a black panther at his home in April. Fortunately, the animal fled without causing harm, highlighting the importance of coexisting peacefully with wildlife in the region.
The capture of the wild black panther in Negeri Sembilan serves as a reminder of the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area and the need for vigilance when encountering such animals. Residents are urged to report any sightings of wild predators to the authorities to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife in the community.
