Blaze at well-known Bangkok pet market claims lives of numerous caged animals

A tragic incident occurred at Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak weekend market on Tuesday, as a fire broke out and claimed the lives of hundreds of caged animals. Among the deceased were dogs, fish, snakes, birds, rabbits, and several exotic species. The fire, which started near the pet section early in the morning, quickly spread through the market, destroying 118 shops before being brought under control within an hour.

According to city officials, the blaze likely originated in a pet dog shop where the owner had left a fan on overnight to provide ventilation and cooling for the animals. A vendor in the market recounted being awakened by the cries of animals above her shop, only to be engulfed in thick smoke that made it difficult to breathe. Fortunately, no human casualties have been reported thus far.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the market, expressing condolences for the loss of life and stating that an investigation into the cause of the fire was underway. The city administration is still assessing the extent of the damage and the cost involved, but they have assured affected shopkeepers that they can apply for compensation.

Chatuchak weekend market is a renowned tourist destination in Thailand’s capital, attracting visitors from around the world to explore its numerous shops and stalls offering a wide range of goods, including food, clothing, furniture, plants, books, and pets. However, pet vendors in the market have faced allegations of trafficking rare and endangered species such as turtles, tortoises, and birds.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in crowded marketplaces and the need for stricter regulations to prevent the exploitation and trafficking of vulnerable animals. As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage, the community mourns the loss of innocent lives and hopes for better safeguards to prevent such tragedies in the future.
