Carava Relishing the Racing Journey at Del Mar Turf Club

Jack Carava’s journey in the horseracing industry is a testament to his passion and dedication to the sport. Starting out as a successful trainer in southern California for almost 40 years, Carava made a bold career change in 2020 by becoming a jockey agent. This decision was driven by a desire to stay in the industry he loved while facing the changing landscape of training that no longer made financial sense for him personally.

As a jockey agent, Carava took on the role of a strategist, counselor, and personal assistant to the riders he represented. He was responsible for deciding which horses his jockeys would ride, pitching them to trainers, making travel arrangements, handling media requests, and providing support when things didn’t go as planned on the track. This new role allowed Carava to utilize his expertise in the industry while exploring a different aspect of horseracing.

One of the key moments in Carava’s career as a jockey agent was teaming up with riders Tyler Baze, Kyle Frey, and Geovanni Franco. Building relationships with these talented jockeys, Carava worked tirelessly to secure rides for them and help them achieve success on the track. His dedication and hard work paid off, with Frey winning the riding title at the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meet and performing well at Del Mar.

Carava’s background in horseracing runs deep, with his father being an accomplished trainer in the 1970s and ’80s. Growing up around the track, Carava developed a passion for the sport early on and eventually found his own path as a trainer and later as a jockey agent. His success in claiming horses and developing a winning strategy for his riders showcased his talent and expertise in the industry.

While Carava misses certain aspects of training, such as being hands-on with the horses and the camaraderie of his team, he finds fulfillment in his new role as a jockey agent. Working closely with his riders, Carava provides guidance, support, and a solid game plan for success. His commitment to maintaining strong relationships with trainers and supporting his riders through the ups and downs of the sport has been instrumental in their achievements.

As Carava navigates the challenges and opportunities of his new career as a jockey agent, he remains grateful for the support of his family and the success of his team. With a first grandchild on the way and a promising future ahead, Carava’s lifelong journey in horseracing continues to inspire and motivate those around him.
