Carriage owner in Charleston defends treatment of horses during hot summer months

Charleston, South Carolina is known for its historic charm and picturesque streets, where horse-drawn carriages clip-clop along the cobblestone roads, offering tourists a unique and nostalgic way to explore the city. However, as the summer heat beats down on the city, concerns have been raised about the safety and well-being of the horses that pull these carriages.

Tommy Doyle, the general manager of Palmetto Carriage Works, is quick to address these concerns, stating that the care of his horses is of utmost importance to him and his family. With 47 years of experience in the business, Doyle emphasizes that they adhere to the ordinances set by the City of Charleston, while also closely monitoring the health and needs of each individual horse.

According to Doyle, the City allows the horses to work up to eight hours a day, but his horses typically only work between five and six hours, and even less during hot weather, usually two to three hours. Additionally, the City mandates that horses be taken off the streets when temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher, further ensuring their well-being.

In between carriage rides, the horses are given a 15-minute break, although Doyle mentions that they often receive up to an hour break, depending on the horse. He also points out that not every horse works every day, as the company owns about 40 horses but only requires up to 18 on a busy day, allowing each horse an average of 16 weeks off per year.

During the summer months, the horses are provided with electrolytes and vitamin E, misted with fans, and have their temperatures checked regularly. Doyle stresses the importance of monitoring each horse individually, as they react differently to heat and exertion. By taking the horses‘ body temperatures before and after each ride, they can tailor their care to meet the specific needs of each animal.

Doyle also highlights the comprehensive care that the horses receive, including regular dentist visits, new shoes every six to eight weeks, two nutritious meals a day, and even a retirement plan. He proudly states that they have not encountered any issues with their horses this summer, attributing this to the personalized care and attention each horse receives.

For those with concerns about the welfare of the carriage horses, Doyle extends an invitation to visit the barn and see firsthand the care and dedication that goes into looking after these animals. With transparency being a core value of his business, Doyle welcomes questions and discussions about the horses, aiming to reassure anyone with doubts about their well-being.

In conclusion, while the sight of horse-drawn carriages may evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance, it is essential to remember the living beings behind the scenes. Through responsible management, adherence to regulations, and a commitment to individualized care, Palmetto Carriage Works strives to ensure the safety and health of their beloved horses, making them an integral part of Charleston’s historic charm.
