Cattle farming emphasized as a means to alleviate poverty in the country

Livestock plays a crucial role in the economy of Sargodha division, with approximately 69 per cent of the rural population directly linked to the sector. Experts believe that promoting livestock on scientific grounds could significantly reduce poverty in the region. Livestock contributes over 18 per cent to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Pakistan, making it a key sector for improving living standards and generating income for farmers.

Pakistan is ranked fifth among milk-producing countries, highlighting the potential for growth in the dairy industry. By focusing on animal genetics and improving semen quality, farmers can enhance animal health, milk, and meat production. This not only benefits individual farmers but also contributes to the overall economy of the country.

At the national level, around 12 million people are involved in cattle rearing, with a significant number of big and small animals across the country. In Sargodha district alone, there are millions of big animals such as buffaloes and cows, as well as small animals like goats and sheep. Additionally, rural poultry and camels are also part of the livestock sector in the region.

One of the key factors contributing to the success of livestock farming in rural areas is the active participation of women farmers. Women play a vital role in cattle rearing, contributing to the management and success of the sector. The government has recognized the importance of women in livestock farming and has implemented initiatives to support widows by providing them with animals for income generation.

Widows like Najma from Shah Nikdur and Sumaira and Urooj Bibi from Sobhaga have benefitted from these initiatives and have successfully managed to improve their economic situation through cattle rearing. By providing animals to widows and creating economic opportunities for them, the government is not only alleviating poverty but also empowering women in rural communities.

Individual farmers like Muhammad Usman from Eeeni have also seen success in cattle farming. Usman, who completed a diploma in cattle farm management, has been able to support his family and fund his son’s education through cattle rearing. By investing in livestock, farmers like Usman have been able to build assets and secure their financial future.

Overall, the livestock sector in Sargodha division holds immense potential for poverty alleviation and economic growth. By promoting scientific practices, supporting women farmers, and providing opportunities for skill development, the region can further harness the benefits of livestock farming for sustainable development.
