Collaboration between MSPCA, TJO, and local shelters to find homes for animals

As the state of Massachusetts works to clear out their animal shelters, one organization is stepping up to make the process easier for both the animals and potential adopters. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is sponsoring a week-long event at the Thomas J. O’Connor Adoption Center in Springfield, where adoption fees for all dogs one year and older are being waived.

Heather Cahillane, a representative from the adoption center, expressed the urgency of finding homes for the animals in their care. With shelters across the state at 90% capacity, it is crucial to get these dogs out of the shelter and into loving homes. The event at TJO is just one of eight shelters in Massachusetts participating in the fee-waiving initiative.

One individual taking advantage of this opportunity is Bill Wallace, a Western Massachusetts native who currently resides in Maine. Wallace, who recently lost his Maltese to Lyme disease, found the cost of adopting a new pet to be prohibitive on a fixed income. The waived adoption fees provided by Mass Saves made it possible for him to welcome a new furry friend into his home.

Among the dogs available for adoption at TJO is Tego, who has been at the shelter since mid-May. Thanks to the Mass Saves event, Tego’s adoption fees are waived for the week, increasing his chances of finding a forever home. Another lucky dog, Matty, now known as Monty, will be heading to Maine with Wallace, where he will enjoy a spacious yard and the company of Wallace’s cats.

The Mass Saves event, which runs through Sunday, aims to not only find homes for these deserving animals but also to ensure that each adoption is a good match for both the pet and the adopter. All dogs available for adoption are medically cleared, and the staff at TJO is dedicated to matching each animal with a family that suits their needs and lifestyle.

As Wallace prepares to make the seven-hour drive back to Maine with his new companion, he reflects on the joy that a pet can bring to a home. „It’s nice to have a dog, I don’t care who you are,“ he shares, highlighting the special bond between humans and their furry friends. With the support of organizations like MSPCA and events like Mass Saves, more animals like Tego and Monty will have the chance to find their forever homes and bring happiness to their new families.
