Controversy Erupts Over Fire Hydrant Puddle, Igniting Debate – NBC New York

A puddle in Brooklyn has become the unlikely home to a group of goldfish, sparking curiosity and concern among residents in the area. Located at the corner of Tompkins Avenue and Hancock Street, the makeshift „Bed-Stuy Goldfish Pond“ has garnered attention both locally and online.

The idea for the goldfish pond came from Je-Quan Irving and his friends, who decided to transform a small puddle created by a leaking fire hydrant into a unique attraction. With just $16 spent at a local pet store, Irving was able to purchase around 100 goldfish to populate the pond. The sight of bright orange fish swimming in the shallow water quickly captured the interest of neighbors and passersby.

Laura Dexter, a Bed-Stuy resident, expressed her amusement at the unconventional sight, stating, „We don’t have an aquarium, so it’s good as we’re going to get.“ The community has taken on the responsibility of caring for the goldfish, with neighbors checking in on them and even feeding them.

Despite the novelty and entertainment value of the goldfish pond, concerns have been raised about the well-being of the fish. Veterinarian Julius Tepper highlighted potential risks such as pollution, predatory birds, and the sustainability of the water supply. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) eventually intervened by shutting off the fire hydrant, prompting Irving to take action to ensure the survival of the goldfish.

Irving reassured the community that the project was not intended as animal abuse, emphasizing his commitment to the well-being of the fish. He mentioned a plan to relocate the goldfish to children in the community once the weather conditions became less favorable for them in the outdoor pond. However, the DEP expressed continued safety concerns regarding tampering with fire hydrants and emphasized the importance of finding a more suitable home for the goldfish.

The story of the Bed-Stuy Goldfish Pond serves as a reminder of the creativity and compassion within communities, as well as the importance of considering the welfare of animals in unconventional situations. While the goldfish may have found temporary refuge in a Brooklyn puddle, efforts are being made to ensure their long-term care and safety.
