National Day and Malaysia Day are important occasions for Malaysians to celebrate their independence and unity as a nation. While many choose to commemorate these days with fireworks, parades, and holidays, one company decided to take a different approach by starting a fundraising campaign for an endangered animal that is also a symbol of the country – the hornbills.

Despite not receiving as much attention as the iconic Malayan tigers, hornbills are facing the threat of extinction due to habitat loss and poaching. Recognizing the importance of conserving these majestic birds, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), launched a campaign to raise funds for the hornbill conservation program.

The campaign involved the sale of limited edition water bottles and mugs, with a portion of the proceeds going towards supporting MNS’s efforts to protect hornbills. Fiona Rodrigues, the Director of Marketing and Development at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Malaysia, emphasized the significance of raising awareness about the country’s wildlife and supporting conservation initiatives.

The company’s annual campaign aims to highlight different endangered animals each year, with the hope of inspiring the public to learn more about Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. Last year, the focus was on tigers, while this year, it was on hornbills. The success of the campaign was evident as Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf managed to raise RM30,000, which was donated to MNS during a special event.

During the event, Yeap Chin Aik, Senior Conservation Officer and Project Manager of MNS’s hornbill conservation project, shared valuable insights about these fascinating birds. According to MNS data, the number of endangered hornbill species has increased significantly over the past decade, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Hornbills play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem by dispersing seeds and promoting forest regeneration. They are also known for their monogamous relationships, with pairs staying loyal to each other for life. Communication is key in their relationships, as they constantly interact with each other through vocalizations.

One interesting fact about hornbills is their unique nesting behavior. They rely on natural cavities in trees to build their nests, with the male providing food for the female and their chicks. This nurturing behavior showcases the dedication of male hornbills as responsible family members.

Known as the „farmers of the forest,“ hornbills contribute to tree planting by dispersing seeds over vast distances during their migrations. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, but they also consume small animals, highlighting their role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

To save hornbills and other endangered species, it is essential for individuals to educate themselves about conservation issues, reduce consumption, support organizations working towards wildlife protection, and report illegal wildlife trading activities. By taking small steps and making conscious choices, everyone can contribute to the preservation of Malaysia’s rich biodiversity.

In conclusion, the campaign initiated by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Malaysia’s wildlife and natural heritage. By raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts, we can ensure the survival of iconic species like hornbills for future generations to appreciate and admire.
