Dale Romans, Trainer at Saratoga Race Course, Achieves Impressive Weight Loss

Trainer Dale Romans is well-known in the horse racing world for his successful training programs that have led to numerous Breeders’ Cup wins, the 2011 Preakness Stakes, and the 2015 Travers Stakes. However, three years ago, Romans found himself in need of a different kind of program – one for his own health and well-being.

In 2020, Romans faced a health scare when he contracted COVID-19 and ended up in the hospital weighing 385 pounds. It was a wake-up call for the 57-year-old trainer, who realized that his lifestyle of early mornings at the barn, long afternoons at the track, and late-night dinners and drinks had taken a toll on his health.

Determined to make a change, Romans decided to approach his weight loss journey in the same methodical way he trains his horses. He started with gastric sleeve surgery in 2021 and began to gradually make changes to his diet and exercise routine.

Instead of two entrée dinners, Romans switched to smaller, healthier meals. He incorporated golf and pickleball into his daily routine and made the decision to quit drinking. These changes, along with his commitment to a healthier lifestyle, led to impressive results.

Over the course of three years, Romans managed to shed an incredible 180 pounds, bringing his weight down to 205 pounds today. The transformation not only improved his health but also gave him a newfound energy and vitality that he now brings to his training of the 10 horses he has at Saratoga this summer.

While Romans doesn’t believe that his weight loss has changed the way he trains his horses, he acknowledges that it has changed the way he takes care of himself. By viewing himself as an athlete and applying the same dedication and discipline to his own health as he does to his horses, Romans has achieved remarkable success in his weight loss journey.

As he continues to enjoy his newfound energy and vitality, Romans remains committed to maintaining his healthier lifestyle and setting a positive example for others in the racing industry. His story serves as a reminder that with determination, dedication, and a well-structured program, anyone can achieve their goals and transform their lives for the better.
