Residents of Little Egg Harbor, a Jersey Shore town, have been facing a smelly problem as hundreds of dead fish have been found floating in a lagoon in the Osburn Island section. The strong odor emanating from the dead fish has made it challenging for residents to enjoy outdoor activities. Additionally, the presence of the dead fish has attracted seagulls in search of a meal, causing further disturbances in the area.
According to reports from 6ABC Action News and CBS Philadelphia, residents have expressed concerns about the destructive behavior of the seagulls attracted to the lagoon. These birds have been causing damage to the tops of houses, cars, and boats in the vicinity. The situation has become increasingly problematic as the birds continue to scavenge for food amidst the dead fish.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has attributed the cause of the dead fish to poor water quality and low oxygen levels in the lagoon. However, the department has assured residents that the fish will naturally clear out with the tide. Caryn Shinske, a spokeswoman for the DEP, stated that Fish & Wildlife staff have determined the event to be isolated, and most of the dead fish will be removed from the lagoon by the tides or tide flow.
Despite the reassurances from the DEP, residents are still grappling with the unpleasant sight and smell of the dead fish in the lagoon. The ongoing presence of the fish and the subsequent influx of seagulls have disrupted the peaceful environment of the area, causing inconvenience to those living nearby.
As the situation unfolds in Little Egg Harbor, residents are hopeful that the dead fish will soon be cleared out, and the disturbances caused by the seagulls will come to an end. In the meantime, efforts to address the root cause of the issue, such as improving water quality in the lagoon, may be necessary to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
