Deputy in Florida breaks car window to rescue small dog from heat

In Pinellas County, Florida, deputies rescued a small dog from a potentially deadly situation after it was left in a hot car on a scorching summer day. The incident occurred on August 2 when a concerned citizen contacted the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) to report a dog locked inside a vehicle at the courthouse parking lot.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies observed that the car’s doors were locked, and the windows were rolled up. Peering inside, they saw the small dog panting heavily and showing signs of distress. With the temperature outside reaching 88 degrees, it was estimated that the inside of the car had soared to around 120 degrees, posing a severe risk to the animal’s health.

In a dramatic turn of events captured on body cam footage, deputies took swift action to rescue the dog by smashing the rear window of the car. The deputy can be heard reassuring the frightened pup as he carefully opened the door and provided comfort. Despite the stressful situation, the deputy’s gentle words and actions helped calm the distressed animal.

Following the rescue, the dog was given water and placed in the back of a patrol car while deputies searched for the owners. The individuals responsible for leaving the dog in the hot car were located inside the courthouse and subsequently arrested for animal cruelty. The dog was then transferred to Animal Control for further assessment and care.

The PCSO emphasized the importance of not leaving pets unattended in vehicles, especially during hot weather, as it can lead to serious health risks and even death. Sadly, this incident is not an isolated case, as similar incidents of animals being left in hot cars have been reported across the state.

In a separate incident in Bradenton, officers were called to rescue a dog trapped in a U-Haul on a sweltering day. These incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars and the legal consequences that can follow.

The PCSO urged pet owners to prioritize the safety and well-being of their animals by never leaving them unattended in vehicles, even for a short period. By taking proactive measures and being responsible caregivers, pet owners can prevent tragic incidents like these from occurring.

As a community, it is essential to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars and to advocate for the protection of animals from neglect and harm. By working together to educate others and promote responsible pet ownership, we can ensure the safety and welfare of our furry companions.
