DNREC Issues Warning Against Keeping Non-Domesticated Animals as Pets: The Dangers of Wild Pets

Pets are a beloved part of many American households, with roughly two-thirds of households owning at least one pet. While dogs and cats are the most common pets, some people opt for more exotic animals like raccoons, bobcats, or even deer. However, experts warn that keeping non-domesticated animals as pets can be harmful to both the owner and the animal itself.

Sam Millman, a deer biologist with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, explains that wild animals learn essential survival skills from their parents and their natural environment. When taken out of their natural habitat and raised by humans, these animals struggle to survive on their own. They may approach predators without fear, have difficulty finding food, and ultimately face a higher risk of danger.

In addition to survival challenges, wild animals may not receive the proper nutrition when kept as pets. Owners may unknowingly feed them food that is harmful or inadequate for their dietary needs. For example, feeding a deer excessive amounts of corn can lead to hoof abnormalities, making it easier for predators to capture them. This lack of proper care can have detrimental effects on the animal’s health and well-being.

Furthermore, wild animals can carry diseases that are transmittable to humans, posing a health risk to both the owner and the animal. Additionally, as wild animals mature, they may become aggressive, especially during breeding season. This change in behavior can be dangerous for the owner and may result in injuries or property damage.

It is also important to note that keeping wild animals as pets is illegal in Delaware. State regulations prohibit the ownership of native wildlife without the necessary permits, except for licensed wildlife rehabilitation experts. This law aims to protect both the animals and the public from the potential dangers of keeping wild animals in captivity.

Despite the good intentions of individuals who rescue seemingly abandoned or injured wild animals, experts advise against interfering with wildlife. Many young animals are left alone by their parents as part of their natural development process. Attempting to care for these animals can disrupt their natural behaviors and hinder their chances of survival in the wild.

If someone comes across a sick or injured wild animal, it is best to report it to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. Trained professionals can provide the necessary care and rehabilitation for the animal to ensure its well-being and eventual release back into the wild.

In conclusion, the message from experts is clear: wild animals should be left in their natural habitat to maintain their wild instincts and ensure their survival. Keeping wildlife wild is essential for the health and safety of both the animals and the public. By respecting nature and refraining from keeping wild animals as pets, we can help preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystem.
