East Wenatchee Prohibits Possession and Use of Exotic and Wild Animals

The use and possession of exotic and wild animals will be banned in East Wenatchee after a 4-2 vote by the city council to enact the restriction Tuesday night. This new ordinance is primarily aimed at traveling circuses, which have been accused of abusing and mistreating the animals. Council member Robert Tidd emphasized the need to stop allowing circuses to mistreat animals for profit, stating that it is time to draw the line.

Wenatchee had previously passed a similar ordinance in April following complaints by a local animal rights group and concerned citizens. The decision to ban exotic and wild animals in circuses has gained momentum in the region, with East Wenatchee now following suit.

However, not all council members were in favor of the new ordinance. Council member Christine Johnson opposed the measure, arguing that it infringes on the rights of residents. She expressed concern over the implication that the government is dictating what people can and cannot have as pets.

During the council meeting, Mayor Jerrilea Crawford clarified that the ban on exotic animals would not affect accredited educational activities featuring wild animals. Additionally, the ordinance does not apply to domestic pets or farm animals such as cats, dogs, cattle, and horses. However, certain exotic animals like primates, large reptiles, big cats, elephants, bears, and marsupials are specifically outlined in the ban.

The passage of the new ordinance in Wenatchee coincided with the Jordan World Circus performing at the Town Toyota Center. The group North Central Washington for Animal Compassion had been vocal in its opposition to the use of exotic and wild animals by circuses. In January, the group successfully lobbied the Greater Wenatchee Regional Public Facilities District to temporarily ban all animals from performing at the circus.

While the ban on exotic animals in circuses is a step towards animal welfare, it has raised concerns among some residents. For instance, a resident who had owned tortoises for years will no longer be allowed to keep the reptile due to the new ordinance. This highlights the impact of such regulations on individual pet owners who may have been caring for these animals responsibly.

In light of the ban on exotic animals in circuses, it is important for residents to be aware of the legalities surrounding ownership of exotic pets in Washington State. While the law is clear on what animals are prohibited, it is less clear on which exotic pets are allowed. For those considering adding an exotic animal to their family, there are eleven options to consider, as outlined in a related article.

Overall, the decision to ban exotic and wild animals in East Wenatchee reflects a growing concern for animal welfare and the need to protect these creatures from exploitation and mistreatment. It is a step towards creating a more compassionate and responsible community that values the well-being of all living beings.
