In a shocking discovery, a dead giant tortoise was found by a passerby in a bush in Ellerbek near Hamburg. The tortoise, known as a Spur-thighed tortoise, is part of the third largest species of tortoises in the world and typically inhabits dry and hot regions of North Africa. Christian Erdmann, the head of the Wildlife and Species Conservation Center in Elmshorn, speculated that the tortoise was abandoned by its owners due to its need for warmth during the winter months, as Spur-thighed tortoises do not hibernate.
Upon examination of the tortoise’s shell, which can reveal its age, the wildlife expert estimated that the tortoise was around 40 years old. Normally, these creatures can live up to 110 years and weigh up to 80 kilograms. Erdmann expressed concern about the ease of purchasing exotic animals like tortoises on the internet or at reptile fairs, where even the most dangerous venomous creatures can be acquired. He called for stricter regulations in Germany to prevent the illegal trade of wild animals, suggesting a registration and microchipping requirement for owners to be easily identified.
The deceased tortoise will be preserved by the caretaker in a secure location. Once the worms have consumed the remains, Erdmann plans to display the shell as a cautionary exhibit to discourage individuals from acquiring exotic animals as pets. This serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with owning such creatures and the potential consequences of neglect or abandonment.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of irresponsible pet ownership and the need for stricter regulations to protect exotic animals from exploitation and mistreatment. It also highlights the importance of education and awareness regarding the care and welfare of such creatures. Hopefully, this unfortunate event will prompt authorities to take action to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the well-being of all animals, both domestic and wild.
