Environment Ministry reports that 59% of rivers in Indonesia are heavily polluted

Indonesia, known for its stunning natural landscapes and rich biodiversity, is facing a significant environmental challenge – river pollution. Luckmi Purwandari, the director of water pollution control at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, revealed that a staggering 59 percent of the 564 rivers in Indonesia are heavily polluted. This alarming statistic sheds light on the pressing issue of water quality in the country.

According to Purwandari, the main culprits behind river pollution in Indonesia are industrial waste, including oil and gas, mining materials, household waste, and livestock waste. These pollutants have detrimental effects on the aquatic ecosystem, causing the death of plants and small animals in rivers due to oxygen depletion. The impact of river pollution extends beyond the aquatic life, affecting the overall health of the environment and posing risks to human health as well.

Despite the grim reality of river pollution in Indonesia, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of improving water quality. Purwandari noted that there has been a positive trend in the condition of the country’s rivers since 2015. Back then, a staggering 79.5 percent of rivers were heavily polluted, whereas now, that number has decreased to 59 percent. This improvement signifies progress in addressing water pollution and restoring the health of Indonesia’s rivers.

One of the key strategies to combat river pollution is to control the volume of waste entering the rivers from various sources, such as home industries, small-scale businesses, households, and livestock.
