On the 14th of August 2024, a significant event took place in the picturesque state of Goa. The ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute inaugurated a small-scale ornamental fish culture unit in Sanquelim village, located in North Goa. This initiative was part of the project titled Entrepreneurship Development and Livelihood Improvement through Demonstration and Training of Sustainable Ornamental Fish Culture in Goa.
The Director, Dr. A. Raizada, who is in charge of ICAR-CCARI, highlighted the importance of involving the local community, particularly Self Help Groups (SHGs), in promoting ornamental fish culture as a sustainable source of income. He emphasized the need to focus on marketing strategies and assured the SHGs and local farmers of full technical support from the institute.
In his address, Dr. Raizada encouraged SHGs to expand their ornamental fish units, thereby promoting entrepreneurship among women and youth in the region. The institute also organized a farmer-scientist interaction to facilitate discussions on future plans and collaborations in the field of ornamental fish culture.
The establishment of the ornamental fish culture unit in Sanquelim village signifies a step towards empowering local communities and enhancing livelihood opportunities through skill development and entrepreneurship. By engaging SHGs and local farmers in this initiative, ICAR-CCARI aims to create a sustainable and profitable venture that benefits the community as a whole.
This project not only provides a platform for economic growth but also promotes environmental conservation through the cultivation of ornamental fish species. The beauty and diversity of ornamental fish make them a valuable asset in the aquaculture industry, attracting both domestic and international markets.
The efforts of ICAR-CCARI in Goa reflect a holistic approach towards rural development, combining technical expertise with community participation to achieve sustainable livelihoods. By encouraging the cultivation of ornamental fish, the institute is not only creating income-generating opportunities but also fostering a sense of pride and ownership among local stakeholders.
Overall, the inauguration of the ornamental fish culture unit in Sanquelim village marks a significant milestone in the journey towards promoting entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods in Goa. With continued support and collaboration, this project has the potential to transform the lives of SHGs and local farmers, while also contributing to the conservation of aquatic biodiversity in the region.
