Evacuation centers established for large animals and people affected by the Alexander Mountain Fire

The Alexander Mountain Fire, located west of Loveland, Colorado, has been causing concern and prompting evacuations in the area. The fire, which started on Monday, July 29, 2024, near Sylvan Dale Ranch close to U.S. Highway 34, has been producing a large, visible plume of smoke that has been visible for miles around.

As of Tuesday at 12 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office announced that large animals must now be evacuated to Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley. The evacuation site at The Ranch in Loveland has been closed, and animals that were previously housed there are being relocated to Island Grove. This move is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals during the fire.

In terms of human evacuations, an overnight shelter has been set up at Foundations Church in Loveland, located at 1380 Denver Ave. The shelter at Namaqua Elementary School has closed, and evacuees are being directed to Foundations Church for assistance. Additionally, another evacuation center has been opened at the Estes Park Events Complex, providing a safe space for those impacted by the fire.

For those with small animals and pets, the NOCO Humane Society in Loveland is accepting these animals for temporary housing. They are able to accommodate small animals up to the size of a goat and are providing necessary care for these pets during the evacuation period. The society is also accepting donations to support their efforts in caring for these animals.

In terms of what to bring when evacuating, the American Red Cross recommends packing essentials such as one gallon of water per person per day, nonperishable food, a can opener, flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, personal hygiene items, a cell phone and charger, a map of the area, copies of important documents, cash, contact information for friends and family, and medications. These items are crucial for ensuring the safety and comfort of individuals during the evacuation process.

Overall, the Alexander Mountain Fire has prompted swift action and coordination among authorities and organizations to ensure the safety of both residents and animals in the affected areas. It is essential for individuals to follow evacuation orders and guidelines to protect themselves and their loved ones during this challenging time.
