Fire station welcomes rescued cat and other animals in need of adoption

The Kalpetta Fire and Rescue team recently made headlines for their heartwarming act of adopting a cat that was rescued from a landslide site. The cat, which was submerged in mud at the Mundakkai spot, was discovered by members of the Scuba diving team from Thiruvananthapuram during a rescue mission. Despite the challenging conditions, the team managed to clean the cat and bring it to the Kalpetta Fire Station, where it captured the hearts of the station staff.

Named Nyla, which means the achiever, the cat is now a beloved member of the Kalpetta Fire Station family. Fed with milk and eggs, Nyla has made a remarkable recovery and is described as playful and affectionate by the station staff. This heartwarming story of survival and compassion serves as a reminder of the resilience of animals in the face of adversity.

In addition to Nyla, the fire station staff also recently rescued two puppies from the Chooralmala site, which were handed over to the military and police special defence group for care. The animal husbandry department officials have also been actively involved in rescue and adoption efforts, offering to hand over domestic animals, including cattle stranded in the landslide, to nearby dairy farmers willing to adopt them after providing necessary treatment.

The animal husbandry department has set up a 24-hour control room at Chooralmala to facilitate the adoption procedures. Domestic animals and birds found alive and dead from disaster-affected areas are brought to the control room, where a team of veterinarians and field officers work tirelessly to provide care and support. With the help of the fire force, small animals are placed in cages, while larger animals are transported to the panchayat veterinary hospital in Meppadi for further treatment.

Dr. Rajesh, the district officer of the animal husbandry department, has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the well-being of the rescued animals. Food and water are provided through NGOs and volunteers, and arrangements have been made to dispose of animal body parts obtained from the incident site. In the midst of a disaster, the efforts of the Kalpetta Fire and Rescue team, the Scuba diving team, and the animal husbandry department highlight the importance of compassion and solidarity in times of crisis.
