First confirmed case of rabies in a fox reported by Animal Control in Lincoln

Lincoln, Nebraska recently experienced its first confirmed case of rabies in a fox, as reported by Lincoln Animal Control. This news serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccinating pets against this deadly virus. The infected fox had come into contact with a person’s dog and was later picked up by Animal Control after showing signs of illness. Denise Bollwitt, Animal Control Manager, emphasized the necessity of rabies vaccination for pets that may encounter wildlife carrying the disease.

In 2024, three rabies cases have been reported in Lancaster County, including two bats and the recent fox case. In the previous year, seven rabies cases involving bats were documented in the county. Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system and is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected animal or contact with infected saliva. Vaccination is the best defense against rabies in pets, and prompt treatment can prevent the virus from spreading to humans.

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department offers valuable advice to prevent rabies transmission. City ordinance mandates rabies vaccination for dogs and cats over three months old in Lincoln. If a pet is bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat, immediate veterinary assistance should be sought. Residents are urged to contact Lincoln Animal Control for assistance with stray, injured, or sick animals in their neighborhood. It is crucial to refrain from adopting wild animals or attempting to care for sick wildlife.

If encountering foxes in the neighborhood, residents are advised not to feed them and to keep food sources away from wildlife. Foxes may exhibit protective behavior towards their young, so it is important to remain calm and make noise to deter them. In the event of potential rabies exposure, individuals should contact their healthcare provider or the health department’s communicable disease program.
