Florida activates price gouging hotline and prepares state agencies for response as Tropical Storm Debby nears

As Tropical Storm Debby approaches Florida, the state is gearing up for potential impacts and taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) is closely monitoring the storm and preparing for any potential challenges that may arise.

Governor DeSantis has issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in 61 counties, allowing state officials to mobilize resources and support communities in the path of the storm. This preemptive action aims to streamline response efforts and ensure that necessary resources are readily available to those in need.

The storm is expected to strengthen rapidly over the weekend, with the possibility of reaching hurricane strength by the time it makes landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast. In anticipation of these developments, FDEM is conducting daily calls with all 67 counties to assess needs and coordinate response efforts effectively.

In addition to working with state agencies, FDEM is collaborating with non-governmental organizations and private sector partners to address any resource requests that may arise during the storm. This coordinated approach ensures a comprehensive and efficient response to the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.

Residents are encouraged to be aware of the flood risks in their area and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property. By visiting the Florida Division of Emergency Management website, individuals can access valuable information on flood preparedness and safety measures.

State agencies have been actively increasing their preparedness efforts in response to the storm. The Florida National Guard is mobilizing up to 3,000 guardsmen to provide support and assistance in affected areas, while the Florida State Guard has deployed resources and personnel for response and recovery operations.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has high-water vehicles and specialized equipment on standby for deployment to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. Similarly, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and the Florida Department of Health (DOH) have finalized storm preparations to ensure the safety and well-being of staff and residents in their care.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is actively preparing for potential road closures and detours, with a focus on clearing shoulders, inspecting drainage systems, and securing maintenance yards and construction sites. Drivers are advised to stay informed through the FL511 app and website for real-time updates on road conditions and closures.

In times of crisis, it is essential for residents, businesses, and consumers to stay informed and prepared. The Florida Attorney General’s Office has activated a price gouging hotline to report any instances of extreme price increases on essential items, while the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) has organized Emergency Response Teams to assess damage and provide support to licensed establishments.

VISIT FLORIDA has activated Emergency Accommodation Modules through online platforms like Expedia and Priceline to assist residents and visitors in finding lodging during the storm. These resources aim to provide real-time availability and support for those impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.

As Florida braces for the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Debby, state agencies and officials are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. By staying informed, prepared, and vigilant, Floridians can weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
