Formerly Homeless Cat Finds a Loving Home After Losing Limb

When Stewey, a 2-year-old male cat, was brought to Los Angeles County’s Baldwin Park Animal Care Center as a stray in late January, he was in a dire condition. Dr. Bridgid Twomey, Veterinary Program Manager for the ASPCA in Los Angeles, recalls the severity of Stewey’s injury, stating that he had a degloving injury on his left front limb that necessitated the amputation of his leg. Despite the challenging circumstances, Dr. Twomey provided post-operative care for Stewey and decided to foster him through his recovery.

Dr. Twomey, who already had two cats of her own, felt compelled to help Stewey in his time of need. She brought him home and was pleasantly surprised by his sweet and food-motivated nature. Over time, Stewey warmed up to her and began seeking affection, showcasing his endearing personality. Dr. Twomey describes him as a „full ham,“ indicating his playful and loving demeanor.

As Stewey continued to heal and adapt to life with three legs, Dr. Twomey noticed his resilience and determination. Despite the challenges he faced, Stewey learned to walk on his remaining legs and eagerly followed Dr. Twomey around the house. He quickly found comfort in familiar spots, such as the couch and a velvet blanket, displaying his ability to adapt and thrive in a new environment.

The ASPCA’s efforts in Los Angeles have been instrumental in saving thousands of kittens, with a focus on providing care and support for animals in need. Stewey’s case was no exception, as Hella Tyler, ASPCA Senior Manager of Foster Care, highlights the importance of treating his injury and ensuring his overall well-being. After his recovery, Stewey, now known as Skipper, was adopted by Nicole, who describes him as her „little sidekick.“ Skipper’s playful and affectionate nature has brought joy and companionship to Nicole, who cherishes his unique personality. Dr. Twomey, who fostered Skipper during his recovery, is delighted to see him thriving in his new home, knowing that her efforts have made a positive impact on his life.
