France Bans Sale of Bowl Aquariums Due to Negative Impact on Fish Health and Wellbeing

In a move that highlights the growing awareness of animal welfare in the pet industry, a leading French aquarium vendor has made the decision to stop selling round fish bowl aquariums. AgroBiothers Laboratoire, the market leader in the French pet grooming industry, has taken a stand against the use of small, round fish bowls due to the harm they cause to fish.

According to AgroBiothers CEO Matthieu Lambeaux, placing fish in small bowls without proper filtration and oxygenation is considered a form of violence against animals. He emphasized that the practice of keeping fish in such confined spaces can drive them to madness and ultimately lead to their premature death. Goldfish, in particular, are known to suffer greatly when kept in small bowls, as they require ample space to swim, clean water, and the company of other fish to thrive.

Goldfish are social animals that can live up to 30 years and grow to a substantial size of about 25 cm when housed in a large aquarium or outdoor pond. However, when confined to small bowls, these majestic creatures often perish within weeks or months. Despite the popularity of goldfish as pets, many people are unaware of the specific care requirements needed to ensure their well-being.

Lambeaux highlighted the need for education on proper fish care practices, stating that many consumers purchase goldfish on impulse without understanding the consequences of keeping them in inadequate conditions. While some European countries, such as Germany, have already banned the use of fish bowls, France currently lacks legislation on the matter.

AgroBiothers Laboratoire has taken a proactive approach by discontinuing the sale of fish bowls with a capacity of less than 15 liters and exclusively offering rectangular aquariums. By doing so, the company aims to prevent the unnecessary suffering of fish and promote responsible pet ownership. Despite the demand for fish bowls in the market, Lambeaux emphasized that it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of the animals over profit.

As a major player in the French pet care products market, AgroBiothers has made a significant impact by taking a stand against the use of round fish bowls. By raising awareness about the harmful effects of keeping fish in inadequate conditions, the company is setting a positive example for the industry as a whole. It is essential for pet owners to prioritize the welfare of their animals and provide them with the proper care and environment they need to thrive.
