Greybull local to compete in the world’s most challenging horse race

Dede Anders, a Wyoming native, had her plans upended when she was called up to compete in the 2024 Mongolian Derby, the world’s longest and toughest endurance horse race. Originally selected for the 2025 competition, Anders now finds herself preparing to compete against 49 other riders from around the world in the grueling 620-mile race across the rugged Mongolian steppe.

The Mongol Derby follows the empire’s nerve system, the horse messenger system created by Ghengis Khan that once connected over half of the world. Competitors ride semi-wild Mongolian horses armed with only their packs, GPS, and backup, riding for 11 hours a day for nine days straight. They must navigate the challenging terrain and swap their mounts every 25 miles at check-in stations where the horses are vetted and checked over. Riders who deliver their horse in poor condition receive penalties, adding to the already demanding nature of the competition.

Anders, with her background in horsemanship and extensive experience in various fields, feels well-prepared for the challenge ahead. Raised on a small ranch in Greybull, she has been involved in all aspects of horsemanship since childhood. Her professional journey as a medic in the U.S. Army, nurse, physician’s assistant, and now a doctorate in medical science and emergency medicine has equipped her with the skills and grit needed for the Mongol Derby.

Despite not having prior experience in endurance racing, Anders is determined to compete in full and aims to finish the race. Her competitive spirit and Wyoming upbringing, which has taught her to navigate remote and challenging situations, give her an edge in the competition. She embraces the challenge of riding semi-feral horses, drawing on her past experiences of riding sassy and unpredictable horses on her family’s ranch.

With her travel preparations underway, Anders is focused on the journey ahead, leaving for Mongolia on August 1 to join her fellow riders for training days before the race’s start on August 7. Wyomingites can track her progress through the derby’s website and make charitable donations to Wyo Hoofbeats, a Cody-based organization that offers equine-assisted therapies and learning programs to the community.

As Anders embarks on this incredible adventure, she carries with her the support of her community and the determination to conquer the challenges of the Mongol Derby. Her journey is a testament to the spirit of adventure, resilience, and passion for horsemanship that defines her as a rider and as a Wyoming native.
