Jockey Joel Rosario was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in a ceremony at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion. Rosario, the first jockey from the Dominican Republic to receive this honor, delivered a heartfelt speech expressing gratitude for the opportunities and support that have led him to this moment. Starting his riding career at the age of 14 in the Dominican Republic, Rosario quickly found success upon moving to Northern California and later to the Southern California circuit. With agent Ron Anderson, he made his mark on the East Coast in 2012, accumulating an impressive record of 3,632 career victories and $322,237,757 in earnings, with 95 Grade I victories.
At the ceremony, Rosario was joined by fellow inductees, including contemporary division honorees Justify and Gun Runner. Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner, and Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year, were recognized for their exceptional careers. Gun Runner, bred by Ben Leon’s Besilu Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen, amassed a record of 15-3-2 in 19 starts and earned $15,988,500. Asmussen praised the owners for their decision to continue racing Gun Runner at 4, a move that led to his Hall of Fame induction. Gun Runner’s success was attributed to the patient training of Asmussen and the skillful rides of jockey Florent Geroux.
Justify, trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, captured the hearts of racing fans with his undefeated record and Triple Crown victory. Owned by a partnership including WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, and Starlight Racing, Justify’s remarkable journey culminated in a 1 ¾-length victory in the GI Belmont Stakes. WinStar’s president, Elliott Walden, reflected on the dream of winning the Triple Crown that had been a long-held aspiration for the farm’s founder, Kenny Troutt. Justify’s historic win broke the curse of Apollo and solidified his place in racing history.
The induction ceremony also honored other notable figures in the racing world, including jockey Abe Hawkins and racehorses Aristides and Lecomte, as well as owners Harry F. Guggenheim and Clement L. Hirsch, and turf writer Joe Hirsch. The event celebrated the contributions of these individuals and their impact on the sport of horse racing.
In his speech, Rosario expressed gratitude to all those who had supported him throughout his career, including trainers, owners, fellow jockeys, valets, grooms, and exercise riders. He acknowledged the integral role that horses play in his success, recognizing their importance in his journey to the Hall of Fame. Rosario’s induction was a testament to his dedication, hard work, and the unwavering support of those around him.
Overall, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony was a celebration of excellence in the world of horse racing, honoring the achievements of jockey Joel Rosario, as well as the outstanding careers of Justify and Gun Runner. The event highlighted the passion, skill, and dedication of those involved in the sport, paying tribute to their contributions to the rich history of horse racing.
