HSI/India aids in providing relief to thousands of animals affected by devastating Assam floods.

The recent devastating floods in Assam have left almost 40 lakh (4 million) animals and people in urgent need of assistance. In response to this crisis, Humane Society International/India, in collaboration with several other organizations, has stepped in to provide critical emergency relief. The collaborative efforts include distributing emergency animal feed, medical and veterinary supplies, as well as food rations, water, and protective gear for affected families.

The Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Relief team from HSI/India is on the ground, working closely with district disaster management authorities and local organizations to ensure that the most affected animals and people receive the help they need. With reports indicating that over 24 lakh (2.4 million) people have been displaced across 30 districts in Assam, and 15 lakh (1.5 million) animals at risk, the situation is dire. The organization’s efforts are crucial in providing relief to those in need.

Praveen Suresh, manager of disaster preparedness response and relief at HSI/India, emphasized the interconnectedness of animal welfare and human well-being in times of crisis. With more than 10 lakhs (1 million) of companion and farmed animals at risk in Assam, the impact on communities and livelihoods is significant. The loss of animal lives, injuries, displacement, and the risk of disease spread are all pressing concerns that HSI/India is addressing through immediate food and veterinary care for animals, while also supporting impacted communities.

HSI/India has a proven track record in responding to disasters, having provided relief in previous emergencies such as the Uttarakhand flash floods and the Kerala floods in 2018. In 2022 and 2023 alone, the organization assisted in saving over 30,000 animals from floods in Delhi, Telangana, and Assam. Their experience and dedication to animal welfare make them a valuable asset in times of crisis.

As the situation in Assam continues to evolve, HSI/India is committed to scaling up its relief efforts to reach as many affected animals and communities as possible. The current focus is on the most affected districts of Dorrang, Dhubri, and Barpeta in Assam, where the need is greatest. By providing immediate assistance and support, HSI/India aims to alleviate the suffering of both animals and people impacted by the devastating floods.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of organizations like HSI/India, along with their experience in disaster response and relief, are crucial in providing aid to the millions of animals and people affected by the floods in Assam. Their dedication to animal welfare and community support is commendable, and their ongoing efforts are essential in mitigating the impact of this humanitarian and animal welfare crisis.
