Indian Council of Agricultural Research hosts National Stakeholder Consultation on Sustainable Development of Ornamental Fisheries in India

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) recently organized a National Stakeholder Consultation on the Sustainable Development of Ornamental Fisheries in India. This event brought together key stakeholders from the ornamental fish industry, government agencies, research institutions, and non-governmental organizations to discuss strategies for promoting sustainable practices in the sector.

Ornamental fisheries, also known as the aquarium fish industry, play a significant role in India’s economy. The country is one of the largest exporters of ornamental fish in the world, with a diverse range of species being bred and traded for domestic and international markets. However, the industry faces several challenges, including overexploitation of wild fish populations, habitat destruction, and poor management practices.

One of the main objectives of the consultation was to identify ways to promote sustainable development in the ornamental fish industry. This includes implementing better management practices, promoting responsible trade, and conserving biodiversity. Participants discussed the need for improved regulations, capacity building, and research to support the sustainable growth of the sector.

Key issues that were addressed during the consultation included the need for better monitoring and enforcement of regulations, the importance of promoting sustainable aquaculture practices, and the role of certification schemes in ensuring the traceability and sustainability of ornamental fish products. Participants also highlighted the need for greater collaboration between government agencies, industry stakeholders, and research institutions to address the challenges facing the sector.

The consultation also emphasized the importance of raising awareness among consumers about the environmental and ethical implications of the ornamental fish trade. By promoting sustainable practices and responsible consumption, stakeholders can help ensure the long-term viability of the industry while conserving biodiversity and protecting natural habitats.

Overall, the National Stakeholder Consultation on the Sustainable Development of Ornamental Fisheries in India provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and develop strategies for promoting sustainability in the industry. By working together towards common goals, stakeholders can help ensure that the ornamental fish industry continues to thrive while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
