It’s James, not Jim or Jimmy

James MacDonald is the youngest of the MacDonald brothers, a well-known racing family from Prince Edward Island. Despite trailing behind his older brothers in age, James has made a name for himself as one of the top drivers in Canada and North America. Unlike his siblings who were horse enthusiasts from a young age, James didn’t develop a passion for harness racing until he was 18.

Working for his brother Anthony, James learned the ropes of the sport and eventually fell in love with racing and the horses he worked with. His driving style is characterized by finesse rather than brute force, a trait he attributes to his success on the track. Drawing inspiration from legendary driver John Campbell, James believes in letting the horse dictate the race, rather than imposing a specific driving style.

In recent years, James has seen a significant increase in his career earnings and success, thanks in part to his decision to race in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the move brought him new opportunities and experiences, it also meant being away from his family for extended periods. Despite the challenges, James has embraced the chance to race in different locations and with top horses.

When asked about his favorite racing venues, James mentions iconic tracks like Lexington, The Meadowlands, and Delaware, OH, but reserves a special place in his heart for Old Home Week in Charlottetown. The annual event holds a special significance for Maritimers and offers a unique racing experience that every harness racing fan should witness.

Reflecting on the dangers of the sport, James acknowledges the risks but emphasizes the importance of staying focused and not letting fear dictate his actions on the track. With his brother Mark having faced serious injuries in the past, James understands the inherent dangers of driving horses but remains committed to the sport he loves.

As a seasoned driver, James has learned from watching and racing with some of the best in the industry, including his brothers, John Campbell, and Brian Sears. He believes in continuous learning and passing on valuable lessons to the next generation of drivers. His advice includes observing and asking questions, as well as understanding the preferences of trainers and owners when driving young horses.

In conclusion, James MacDonald’s journey from a latecomer to harness racing to a top driver in Canada and North America is a testament to his dedication, skill, and love for the sport. With a humble approach and a focus on the well-being of the horses he drives, James continues to make his mark on the racing world, carrying on the legacy of the MacDonald racing family from Prince Edward Island.
