Jasper’s Pride and Sea Streak Represent Jersey at Haskell

The Garden State will be well represented in the upcoming Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park on July 20, with longshots Jasper’s Pride and Sea Streak part of the top-class field. These two Jersey-breds will be aiming to make history by becoming the first state-bred horses to win the Haskell in 44 years, a feat last achieved by Thanks to Tony in 1980.

For Monmouth Park mainstays Eddie Owens Jr. and Chuck Spina, this race presents a unique opportunity. Both trainers will be competing in their first Haskell and running a horse in a grade 1 race for the first time in their long careers. Owens, who grew up near the track and learned his trade working under seasoned trainers, expressed his calm demeanor leading up to the race. He mentioned that while he feels the usual nerves before the gate opens, he tries to maintain an even keel throughout the process.

On the other hand, Spina, who has been based at Monmouth Park since 1972, is excited about the prospect of participating in such a prestigious race. This will only be his second graded stakes race start, with his previous experience coming in 2013. Training Jasper’s Pride for Prancing Horse Stable, Spina is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the big race on the big day at his favorite track.

Owens will be conditioning Sea Streak for owner/breeder Holly Crest Stable. After Sea Streak’s impressive win in the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth in May, Owens emphasized that the horse’s Jersey-bred origin should not be underestimated. He highlighted the competitive nature of the horse and dismissed any notions that Jersey-breds are inferior to horses from other regions.

Despite their longshot status, both trainers are determined to make an impact in the Haskell Stakes. Owens, who has known Spina since his early days on the track, expressed his admiration for his fellow Jersey trainer and wished him luck in the race. However, Owens made it clear that his ultimate goal is to win the race with Sea Streak, who will be starting from the outside post under jockey Jairo Rendon.

As the race day approaches, Owens remains focused on his objective of winning the Haskell Stakes. He is confident in his horse’s abilities and has set his sights on the winner’s circle. With a strong rooting interest in the New Jersey Thoroughbred breeding program, both trainers are determined to showcase the talent and potential of Jersey-bred horses on a national stage.
