Leader Dogs for the Blind’s Puppy Boom: Four First-Time Moms Welcome 24 Offspring

Leader Dogs for the Blind is a nonprofit organization based in Rochester Hills, Michigan, that provides people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills for safe and independent daily travel using a guide dog or a white cane. Each of these Leader Dog Moms has her own unique story and personality. Fleur-de-lis, a Labrador retriever, is the proud mom of five male puppies. Toffee, a sweet Labrador retriever/golden retriever cross, welcomed eight adorable puppies. Mildred, a petite Labrador retriever, gave birth to three male puppies. Taffy, a yellow Labrador retriever/golden retriever cross, delivered a litter of eight puppies.

These 24 puppies represent a future of self-confidence and independence for 24 individuals who will rely on them as guide dogs. However, the journey for these puppies is just beginning, and they need the support of volunteers to help them reach their full potential.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is actively seeking volunteers to assist in raising and caring for these future guide dogs. Volunteer Breeding Mom Hosts provide year-round homes for breeding moms like Fleur-de-lis, Toffee, Mildred, and Taffy. They assist the mom during birth and care for the puppies during their critical first weeks of life. Volunteer Puppy Raisers, on the other hand, provide a loving home, basic obedience training, and crucial socialization experiences for the puppies for about a year.

No prior experience is necessary to volunteer for either position, as Leader Dogs for the Blind provides comprehensive training and support throughout the process. The main requirements are a love for dogs, a sense of commitment, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
