Maine CDC Confirms Rabid Raccoon Sighting in Nobleboro

Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be transmitted to humans through the saliva of infected animals. In a recent incident in Nobleboro, Maine, a raccoon that scratched a woman was confirmed positive for rabies after testing by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This serves as a reminder of the importance of taking any encounter with a potentially rabid animal seriously and seeking prompt medical attention.

According to Maine CDC Field Epidemiologist Megan Kelley, post-exposure treatment for rabies should begin within a matter of days, as it is no longer effective once symptoms appear. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms manifest, underscoring the urgency of seeking medical care following any potential exposure.

Rabies is fairly common among wild animals in Maine, with raccoons being one of the primary carriers of the virus. Kelley emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife to reduce the risk of exposure. Signs of rabies in animals include abnormal behavior such as excessive aggression, lack of fear, uncoordinated movements, and excess salivation.

In the event of encountering a potentially rabid animal, Kelley advised contacting the appropriate authorities for assistance. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office animal control officer and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife game wardens can help evaluate the situation and handle the animal safely if necessary. It is important to refrain from using firearms to dispatch animals in residential areas, as this can pose additional risks.

Kelley also highlighted the importance of vaccinating pets, including dogs and cats, against rabies to lower the risk of transmission to humans. Additionally, she recommended contacting the Maine CDC or the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in cases of suspected rabies exposure for evaluation and guidance.

Overall, the key takeaway from this incident is the need for vigilance and caution when interacting with wildlife. By following safety guidelines, seeking prompt medical attention, and vaccinating pets, individuals can help prevent the spread of rabies and protect themselves and their communities from this deadly disease.
