In a move to support local food and agriculture businesses, the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development has approved a Food and Agriculture Investment Program (FAIP) grant of $75,000 to Michigan Turkey Producers Cooperative, Inc. This grant will assist the company in reconfiguring its current cold storage capacity, allowing for expanded capacity to fulfill orders more efficiently. The investment is expected to enhance local area supply chains and generate new economic opportunities in West Michigan.

This includes upgrading their freezer to Quick Freeze Racking (QFR), a more efficient freezing method that will increase their overall capacity. By enhancing their cold storage capabilities, the company will be able to meet the demands of current clients and attract new business opportunities.

Michigan Turkey Producers Cooperative, Inc. is a grower-owned cooperative that has been operating since 1998. With 5.3 million adult male turkeys harvested annually from 53 Michigan family farms, the company has seen significant growth over the years. Their purchase of a vegetable processing and storage facility in 2006 allowed them to expand their production capacity and offer a variety of ready-to-eat turkey products to local, national, and international markets.

Brian Boerigter, President of Michigan Turkey Producers Cooperative, Inc., expressed gratitude for the support from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in making the cold storage expansion project possible. He emphasized the importance of being able to respond to customer demand and improve order fulfillment processes through these upgrades.
