New CDC Regulations for Traveling with Your Dog

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced new rules for pet owners planning on flying with their dogs, aimed at simplifying the process for those arriving in the U.S. from countries that are considered „dog rabies-free“ or low-risk. These new regulations apply to travelers entering the country by land, plane, or cruise.

Starting on August 1st, 2024, pet owners entering the United States will be required to fill out a CDC Dog Import Form upon arrival. While the form can be completed on the travel date, the CDC recommends preparing ahead and filling it out a few days or up to six months before traveling from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country. This form will remain valid for 6 months and can be used multiple times for entry into the U.S. as long as the dog has not been in a high-rabies country.

The CDC Dog Import Form is free to fill out, but each pet will need its own form. To determine if a country is considered dog rabies-free or low-risk, pet owners can check the CDC website, which lists countries with a high dog rabies risk. For travelers coming from countries with a high risk of rabies, they must fill out the CDC Dog Import Form and have either a certification of U.S.-issued rabies vaccination form or a USDA-endorsed export health certificate.

All pets arriving in the U.S. from any country must appear healthy upon arrival, be at least six months old, and have a microchip inserted before receiving a rabies vaccine. Previously, there was no specific form required for dogs traveling into the U.S. from countries with low or no risk of rabies, making this new regulation a significant change in the process.

The United States has been free of dog rabies since 2007, a milestone in public health and animal welfare. The World Health Organization estimates that rabies kills an estimated 59,000 people annually across more than 150 countries, with the vast majority of cases originating from the bite of an infected dog. These new regulations aim to further protect public health and prevent the spread of rabies through international travel.

In conclusion, the CDC’s new rules for pet owners traveling with their dogs to the U.S. from dog rabies-free or low-risk countries are designed to streamline the process and ensure the safety of both pets and humans. By following these guidelines and filling out the necessary forms, travelers can help prevent the spread of rabies and ensure a smooth entry into the United States for their furry companions.
