Pets are an integral part of many families, including those within the U.S. Army community. At Fort Cavazos, Texas, pets play a significant role in contributing to morale, physical and mental fitness, and even serving as service animals on the installation. To ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and their furry companions, U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Cavazos has established a comprehensive domestic animal policy. This policy aims to maintain order, minimize risks, and create a welcoming environment for pets within the community.
Chris Albus, the Cavalry Family Housing project director, emphasizes the importance of following the regulations and rules set forth by the garrison regarding pet ownership. Residents are allowed to have up to two pets, which can be either dogs or cats. Additionally, small animals such as birds, fish, and guinea pigs are permitted as long as they are properly cared for. It is essential for all pet owners on post to enroll their pets with the Fort Cavazos Veterinary Center within five days of bringing them into housing. Proof of current vaccines, testing, and microchipping is required for registration on post, as outlined in the Fort Cavazos domestic animal policy.
In situations where residents or visitors come across stray animals on post, Captain Vivian Holt, branch chief for the Fort Cavazos Veterinary Services Branch, advises contacting the military police or the Directorate of Public Works. Stray animals found on post are taken to the stray animal facility run by Killeen Animal Services. The facility holds the animal for three working days, during which time owners can claim their pets with proper proof. If unclaimed, the fate of the animal is determined by Killeen Animal Services.
For service animals, Fort Cavazos maintains a clear distinction between service animals and emotional support animals. Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks to assist individuals with disabilities, such as guiding individuals with visual impairments. On the other hand, emotional support animals provide comfort and support to individuals with mental health conditions but are not trained to perform specific tasks like service animals. The garrison’s domestic animal policy incorporates the guidelines set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 regarding service animals‘ accessibility to facilities on the installation.
Visitors on post are expected to adhere to the rules and limitations regarding bringing animals onto the installation to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors. The Fort Cavazos domestic animal policy provides detailed information on pet ownership, visitation, support services, and more. Residents, visitors, and employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the policy to address any questions or concerns related to having and bringing animals onto The Great Place. The policy also includes contact information for specific topics related to pet ownership, making it a valuable resource for all members of the Fort Cavazos community.
