Nickel Mines Pose Threat to Flora and Fauna of Wawonii Island

The condition of the sea on the coast of Sukarela Jaya Village in Southeast Wawonii, Konawe Islands, Southeast Sulawesi, has been a cause for concern due to pollution caused by mud. This issue is believed to be a result of mining activities, particularly nickel mining, which has faced protests from residents for its negative impact on the environment. The ecosystem of Wawonii Island is at risk, with over 1,000 plant species and numerous animals, including green turtles and endemic birds, facing threats to their habitats.

Researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) have expressed their worries about the damage caused by nickel mining on Wawonii Island. Rugayah, a taxonomist at BRIN, highlighted the importance of the island’s flora, which includes coconut plantations, chocolate, cloves, and cashew nuts. These plants not only provide food for the local residents but also contribute to the island’s biodiversity. However, the current state of the island differs significantly from previous years before mining activities began.

Ethnobotanist expert Mulyati Rahayu emphasized the significance of okra, a vegetable rich in antioxidants and vitamins, which is commonly found in Wawonii. This plant, known as hoinu locally, has been a part of the island’s ecosystem for over 200 years. The rich flora and fauna of Wawonii have been documented by researchers, showcasing the island’s diverse ecosystems.

The Conservation of Natural Resources Agency of Southeast Sulawesi recently evacuated a dugong found by residents on Wawonii Island, highlighting the importance of protecting endangered species in the region. Laode Alhamd, an ecology expert, emphasized the rich biodiversity of Wawonii, with various species of fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, bats, and insects inhabiting the island. The protection of turtles and tortoises is crucial, as their habitats are at risk due to environmental damage caused by mining activities.

Residents of Wawonii Island have reported a decline in fish population, polluted water sources, and social conflicts arising from environmental degradation. They have called for the government to revoke mining permits due to violations of laws and environmental damage. However, the company responsible for the mining activities has denied these allegations, stating that they adhere to good mining practices and implement various environmental programs to mitigate their impact.

In conclusion, the delicate ecosystem of Wawonii Island is under threat from mining activities, jeopardizing the diverse flora and fauna that call the island home. It is essential to prioritize environmental conservation and sustainable practices to protect the island’s biodiversity and ensure the well-being of its residents. Collaboration between stakeholders, government agencies, and local communities is crucial in safeguarding the natural resources of Wawonii Island for future generations.
