Potential policy change sparked by unleashed dogs in Summit County, Colorado

Summit County, located in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and dog lovers alike. With its stunning mountain views and miles of hiking trails, it’s no wonder that many residents and visitors choose to bring their furry companions along for the adventure. However, recent issues with unleashed dogs in unincorporated parts of Summit County have prompted officials to consider changing the current leash laws.

Unlike the towns of Breckenridge, Silverthorne, Dillon, and Frisco, where dogs are required to be on a 6-foot leash at all times, unincorporated parts of Summit County have more lenient regulations. As long as a dog responds to voice commands and stays within 10 feet of its owner, it is not required to be on a leash. While this may seem convenient for some pet owners, it has led to a rise in incidents involving unleashed dogs causing problems on trails, recreation paths, and other outdoor areas.

J.J. McGill, the Director of the Summit County Animal Shelter and Animal Control, has noticed a significant increase in the number of people not following the current leash laws. McGill and his team are now exploring the possibility of changing the regulations to align with the stricter leash laws in the neighboring towns. The goal is to ensure the safety of both pets and people who frequent these outdoor spaces.

One resident, Andy Stratton, has experienced firsthand the consequences of unleashed dogs in areas where they should be leashed. He walks his dog, April, multiple miles each day and has had several negative encounters with unleashed dogs. Stratton emphasizes the importance of following leash laws and proper dog etiquette to prevent incidents that could harm pets or their owners.

In the past five years, Summit County Animal Control and Shelter have issued the most citations for unleashed dogs compared to other municipalities in the area. This statistic highlights the need for stricter enforcement of leash laws to maintain order and safety in public spaces. While some may find it challenging to keep track of where dogs are allowed off-leash, the simple solution, according to Stratton, is to leash your pet when in doubt.

Stratton compares having an unleashed dog on a recreation path to driving on the wrong side of the street, emphasizing that it is unlawful behavior. He stresses the importance of responsible pet ownership and respecting the rules put in place to protect everyone’s well-being. McGill echoes this sentiment, stating that being a respectful dog owner includes following leash laws and considering the safety of others.

As discussions continue regarding potential changes to the leash laws in unincorporated Summit County, it is essential for pet owners to be mindful of their responsibilities. By leashing their dogs and practicing good etiquette while enjoying the great outdoors, residents and visitors can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable environment for all. Stay tuned for updates on any developments in Summit County’s efforts to address the issue of unleashed dogs and promote responsible pet ownership.
