Powell woman set to compete in the world’s most challenging horse race

Dede Anders, a Wyoming native, found herself thrust into the world of the Mongol Derby sooner than expected. Originally selected to compete in the 2025 race, she was called up to the 2024 competition with just over a month’s notice. The Mongol Derby is known as the world’s longest and toughest endurance horse race, spanning 620 miles of the rugged Mongolian steppe. Riders must navigate the challenging terrain, riding semi-wild Mongolian horses and swapping mounts every 25 miles at check-in stations.

Anders, with her background in horsemanship and extensive experience in various fields, including nursing and emergency medicine, is well-prepared for the physical and mental demands of the race. Despite not having prior experience in endurance racing, she embraces the challenge with a competitive spirit. Her upbringing on a ranch in Greybull and her cowboy and rodeo background have instilled in her the necessary skills and resilience to tackle the Mongol Derby.

The history of Wyoming riders in the Mongol Derby is impressive, with notable successes from riders like Robert Long and Deirdre Griffith. Anders, with her competitive nature and determination to finish the race, is poised to continue this legacy of Wyoming riders making their mark on the international stage. Her willingness to embrace the unpredictable nature of riding semi-feral horses reflects her adventurous spirit and determination to push herself beyond her limits.

Despite the shortened preparation time due to being bumped up to the 2024 race, Anders remains focused on the task at hand. With travel plans in place to fly to Mongolia and join her fellow riders for training days before the race, she is gearing up for the ultimate test of endurance and skill. Wyomingites can follow her progress through the derby’s website and support her chosen charity, Wyo Hoofbeats, which offers equine-assisted therapies and learning programs to vulnerable populations.

As Anders embarks on this incredible journey, her story serves as a testament to the resilience, grit, and competitive spirit of Wyomingites. Her determination to face the challenges of the Mongol Derby head-on showcases the indomitable spirit that defines the people of Wyoming. With her eyes set on the finish line, Dede Anders is ready to make her mark on the world stage and inspire others with her unwavering courage and determination.
